A Weekend at Home

After celebrating Emma and Ellen's birthdays on Friday night, I hopped on the train back home for the night. My flying visit home was in honour of celebrating my Grandparents golden wedding anniversary on Sunday. I admire them both for making it to 50 years of marriage, it really is a feat!

Before the celebrations began on Sunday, my Mum organised a 'safari supper' at home. The concept is simple, each couple prepares a course, but it must be kept top secret until the food is served. You then score each other and the winner is crowned at the end!

Naturally, we started with champagne and olives.

First course was prepared by Molly and Huw. A warm goats cheese, fig and toasted walnut salad with a walnut pesto dip. A real taste sensation, particularly the walnut pesto. Even my goats cheese hating Dad enjoyed this. In fact, he gave it full marks!

For the main course, my parents served a slow cooked beef bourguignon with celeriac mash and vegetables. The celeriac mash was a great light alternative to mash potato, perfect when serving as part of a 3 course meal!

And last, but not least, James and I took on the dessert. Our dish was called the 'triple tipple'. It consisted of a limoncello posset, gin and tonic jelly and baileys melts (basically mini macaroons!).

After desserts, we scored each other, with James and I taking first place! It was a very close competition though! We finished the night with a heated game of articulate, which was won by Molly and Huw.

On Sunday it was time to get ready for our Grandparents 50th Anniversary party. We got our glad rags on and had a few pictures before driving over to Oakham for the event.

The party was held at the Oakham School cricket pavillion. We enjoyed a prosecco reception and canapes, followed by a buffet with speeches and poems, accompanied by my cousin Jack playing the saxophone.

It was a lovely day (minus the terrible weather!) spent with family and friends celebrating a huge milestone in my grandparents lives.
